BUWAN NG WIKA 2016
By: Julienne Allyah C. Legutan
Every August, Franciscans always celebrate Buwan ng Wika. It is where students dedicate the whole month in remembering, sharing, and giving value to our language. This celebration helps us to show how nationalistic we are. This year’s theme was “Wikang Filipino: Wika ng Karunungan.” Our school has prepared a lot of activities for the students. First, there was a Daglitasan where each level has one representative. They were presented with two questions to answer. All of them did an excellent job as through their answer; they help spread the definition and importance of the Filipino Language. The balagtasan was an excellent way to know everyone’s opinion, and at the same time, it teaches the students the value of our native language.
On August 26, 2016, we held the Buwan ng Wika Celebration for the high school students. There was also a performance by each level. Their performances consist of a cultural and contemporary dance that everyone surely enjoyed. Their performances symbolized how diverse and unique our country is. It is genuinely touching to witness students, who are the youth today, perform traditional dances that define and show our rich culture. That means that even though we continue to become modernized as years go by, we still look back at the past, our culture, and our traditions.
Aside from the baligtasan and cultural performances, who would forget the Lakan and Lakambini competition? Each level has representatives. Each level representative wore their national costume, formal wear, and performed well for the talent portion. The question and answer portion tested the contestants’ knowledge regarding our country and our language. Their confidence, poise, and nationalism make them stand out. But just like stars in the night sky, there will always be one who will shine the most. Alvin Jan Diaz of Grade 10-Einstein became the Lakan 2016, and Donita Mae Manlunas of Grade 8-Aristotle the Lakambini of 2016. There was also a Food Raffle hosted by the Student Council. Cakes, pizza, doughnuts, gift checks from the standards were the prizes donated by sponsors. The Student Council was thankful for them. The students enjoyed the raffle draw, especially the lucky winners.
Students are not only students; they were the citizens of the country first. It is truly right for us to celebrate Buwan ng Wika. Through this celebration, we are taken back to the past as we relive and unfold our country’s beautiful traditions. We give importance to our language as it was part of our culture. Jose Rizal once said, “The youth is the hope of this country.” The future of our country lies in our hands; We need to give value and importance to our country now that we are still young. Above all, the Buwan ng Wika celebration allows us to become not only better students but better citizens of our country.
